Refractive Surgery: Inside the Numbers
More than 1.3 million laser eye procedures were performed last year and more than 400,000 in the first three months of 2001. Visx, which supplied the machinery – and collected fees – for about two-thirds of them, gets about half of its revenue from royalties each time its machines are used. However, after Visx dropped its royalty to $100 from $250 in the face of growing competition from Nidek, which does not charge such fees, Visx’s revenue plummeted 34 percent, to $184.6 million, in the year ended March 31.
Here’s a breakdown of the laser systems preferred by U.S. refractive surgeons, according to industry newsletter Market Scope:
Visx systems are used in 62.4 percent of procedures
Alcon’s(Autonomous/Ladarvision) in 22.1 percent
Nidek’s in 9.9 percent
Several others account for the remaining 5.6 percent
